Firewall
Problem: External intruders
IT infrastructures that are linked with external networks have an Achilles’ heel: Without notice, external sources are able to gain access to confidential data located on processors or servers of a company network. Mail addresses, IP addresses, processor names or user data – for intruders this is valuable information.
Solution: “Body check” for your data
Security means in detail: any data traffic first encounters the firewall which defines the access policies.
Firewalls filter all admissible log files and ports to allow data access or data traffic between different networks. In this case, the potential communication is restricted to an individually defined standard.
Special firewalls can be used as Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateways, e.g. to connect external locations safely or to provide remote access. In this way, spies and viruses have no chance to enter the system via the virtual VPN tunnel.
For remote users connected with the Internet or company networks via UMTS or WLAN, a personal firewall is an absolute necessity!
Defend "DoS attacks"
Firewall products offer solutions to defend denial-of-service attacks ("DoS attacks"). These attacks aim to shut down a host or a server, e.g. by targeted overload.
Companies often use several firewalls with different security requirements. However, a central administration and a log file analysis are of fundamental importance.
Intrusion Prevention Systems
Current Intrusion Prevention Systems (IPS) even protect IT infrastructures from open ports exploitations. IPS is a high-performing combination of a firewall and anti-virus tools.
The spread of worms, illegal net scans, denial-of-service attacks and Voice over IP attacks, etc. are successfully prevented by IPS.
