In various companies, many colleagues, even entire departments, know each other’s passwords. The essential problem: password codes are simply too weak. The most popular password that seems to be very attractive to many users is the word “password” itself followed by a series of numbers like “321”.
Most password codes can be easily cracked by spying, guessing or using simple tools from the Internet. However, this issue can be prevented in a simple but effective way with authentication.
Solution: Often smarter
A reliable solution is provided by the “two-factor authentication” (for example, smart cards or SSL certificates based on cryptographic procedures)
One example: Every user uses a personal “token”. As one authentication factor is the physical token, the second is the user name and a PIN (Personal Identification Number), which is only known by this individual person. Without both factors, authentication cannot take place.
