Encryption
Problem: A picture postcard is no registered letter
When dealing with strictly confidential matters, employees generally abide by their obligations, but some do not. The same holds true for electronic communication, especially in the case of working with personal information, intellectual property or sensitive business data.
Solution: It always affects the right people
Electronic encryption is a necessary key component of a company’s security concept. It provides a safe communication via unsafe channels for e-mails, internal data exchange and in particular for remote access.
In general, every encryption solution works in the same way: information is transformed into a form that cannot be understood by unauthorised people. Only authorised people are able to decode the cryptogram, referred to as ciphertext via special knowledge, referred to as key.
- Further information...
Encryption needs to meet three essential criteria:
- Confidentiality - The message is only readable for the defined recipient.
- Authenticity – The sender’s genuineness is ensured.
- Integrity – The message must not be modified between sender and recipient.
Depending on the methodology and environment there are several encryption approaches; group based encryptions whereby certain users gain access to information among each other; encryptions whereby traffic gateways get protection (e.g. between Internet gateways or within a network); or encryptions used for protecting a company’s entire communication by IPSec protocol.
An important issue is the protection of mobile devices like notebooks (e.g. hard disk encryption) or MDAs (mobile digital assistant). If information on handheld devices is unencrypted it can be easily “skimmed” and misused. Thus, encryption as well as digital signatures using a public-key encryption are reliable solutions for preventing these risks.
It needs to be effective – and not annoying!
High performance security is characterised by seamless integration. Therefore, the following organisational and technical parameters should be considered and specified in advance. Encryption should:
- Be based on an approved and verifiable security concept without side effects.
- Provide maximal integration potential for existing IT structures.
- Support the common work habits as well as the corporate safety policy.
- Work without any limits; within the network as well as for local clients.
