PC-WARE makes commitment to Gewandhaus zu Leipzig

Leipzig, 06/02/2007

Leipzig, 06.02.2007 – PC-WARE will in future be an important sponsor of one of the most famous orchestras in the world, the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig. Today Prof. Andreas Schulz, the director of the Gewandhaus, in the presence of the conductor of the Gewandhaus orchestra, Riccardo Chailly, handed over the premium partner certificate to Dr. Knut Löschke, chairman of the board of management of PC-WARE.

Dr. Knut Löschke sees the commitment of his company as being directly in the tradition of Leipzig commerce: “Sixteen merchants founded their orchestra in 1743 and paid for its maintenance. I think it’s a brilliant idea to find another 16 business people today to provide substantial support for the Gewandhaus orchestra which was descended from it. The opportunity to be one of the 16 just inspired us.“

PC-WARE sees its contribution to the Gewandhaus as being part of its global “Social Engagement” particularly in view of the continued globalisation of the company.

Löschke added: ”It is not the primary role of a company to concern itself with art, sport, education and so on. So much the better though if they do. Our support for schools, our adopted kindergarten in South Africa and not least our commitment to culture in Leipzig are a part of our own company culture. Our view of sponsoring is not to hand out charity in an unplanned way but to have a long-term partnership of giving and receiving which benefits both sides. Our partnership with the Gewandhaus is a fortunate coincidence because the orchestra operates nationally and internationally on an equally high level as our company. In addition we both have a sort of ambassadorial role for Leipzig in the wider world.“

The Gewandhaus orchestra in Leipzig is the oldest civic concert orchestra. When it moved to the Messehaus (trading house) of the cloth merchants (Gewandhaus) in 1781 it came to be called the "Gewandhausorchester" and the name has stuck until today. Nowadays the orchestra plays at three venues in Leipzig: the concert house on the Augustusplatz, as the orchestra of the Leipzig Opera and at the Thomaskirche (Church of St Thomas). The Gewandhaus orchestra gives over twenty concerts each season on tour in Germany and abroad. In the spring of 2007 the orchestra will go on a two-week tour in the USA.
