Overview of the Service Provider Licence Agreement (SPLA)

Microsoft introduced the Service Provider Licensing Agreement (SPLA) to provide a unique opportunity for Service Providers to provide Software as a Service as a pay-as-you-go month-to-month licensing programme. Similar to contracting, businesses are now looking for a solution that they can call upon when demand is high and reduce when demand is poor as part of a solution that allows them to control budgets and risk.

The Service Provider Licence Agreement (SPLA) is the month-to-month licensing program designed to enable Service Providers to provide hosting, outsourcing and other software services to customers without the up-front capital costs and increased risk. The SPLA is a 3-year agreement for organisations who want to provide hosted solutions on a Microsoft Platform to their end customers.

The SPLA provides Service Providers elements of Software Assurance, including upgrade/downgrade rights and allowing customers to ensure they are using the latest versions of Microsoft Software.
